A very interesting book, very detailed. Written clearly enough for a beginner , and useful for Greek scholars . I have a PH.D. In Greek language and history And I found a number of details new to me. The photos are well chosen and complement the text perfectly . This book is a must for the library of students of Greece, as well as Greek scholars .

I love this series as I've written before. This book was very in-depth on the history. The quality of the pictures is amazing. Every book I've gotten in this series have been on the money.

Comprehensive as it comes, but organized very poorly. Not accessible. Very hard to pick through. The book could be fantastic were there more headings and subheadings, an invaluable source for students and scholars.

Wonderful book, lavishly illustrated and not written at the level of an academic specialist, though knowing something about Greek mythology wouldn't hurt. A real bargain.

I needed this book for a class... it would not be fair to rate this book according to class I took that emplemented it. However, I really must. FORMAT ISSUE: I wish the pictures were aligned with the text, so that there would be an ease of obtaining the information quicker. Flipping the pages back and forth seemed like a format issue rather than an information issue. The stories associated with the Art well, except that it jumped the Art around based on the story and not a timeline, so it caused confusion for my class. Some art pieces were more popular during a certain time period than others and my class expected us to know the time periods...etc. there are no titles or outlines outside of the chapters headline, so I wrote a lot of subtitles in the margins, so I could go back to the stories and characters I needed. I would not recommend this book if you are unfamiliar with Greek mythology... I had to do many google searches and outside research in order to fully comprehend the entirety of the books storyline, as it flips around quite fast, take time for that. Also many names have a variety of spellings, for i.e.
Remember the name of Achilles mom’s name and the name of the lady who thought of as his wife, but was not his wife... etc. I could write more...
But overall, The format is the issue here.

A very informative book on the subject. This book is from 1991 and may need to be supplied by more recent works and the pictures are in Black/White - not in color - which makes it a bit "oldfashioned".
