The Oxford Companion to Classical Civilization (Oxford Companions) 2nd Edition, Kindle Edition

4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 18 ratings

What did the ancient Greeks eat and drink? What role did migration play? Why was emperor Nero popular with the ordinary people but less so with the upper classes? Why (according to ancient authors) was Oedipus ('with swollen foot') so called?

For over 2,000 years the civilizations of ancient Greece and Rome have captivated our collective imagination and provided inspiration for so many aspects of our lives, from culture, literature, drama, cinema, and television to society, education, and politics. Many of the roots of the way life is lived in the West today can be traced to the ancient civilizations, not only in politics, law, technology, philosophy, and science, but also in social and family life, language, and art.

Beautiful illustrations, clear and authoritative entries, and a useful chronology and bibliography make this Companion the perfect guide for readers interested in learning more about the Graeco-Roman world. As well as providing sound information on all aspects of classical civilization such as history, politics, ethics, morals, law, society, religion, mythology, science and technology, language, literature, art, and scholarship, the entries in the Companion reflect the changing
interdisciplinary aspects of classical studies, covering broad thematic subjects, such as race, nationalism, gender, ethics, and ecology, confirming the impact classical civilizations have had on the modern world.

Top review from the United States

I have owned my copy for a few years and I cannot recommend it enough. The price of this volume vs. the Oxford Classical Dictionary (by the same editing team) makes this a very attractive and affordable alternative to the more exhaustive OCD.

5.0 out of 5 stars making it easy to browse from one to another

This is an essential, comprehensive reference work for all classicists, written to a high standard. The paperback version, which I bought several years ago for an undergraduate course, suffered from several issues. First the sheer size of the book made it unwieldy. Second, some of the larger entries were put into special sections without page numbers, making referencing difficult. Third and most frustratingly, there was no index, which made full searching impossible. The Kindle version has resolved all these issues. The text is fully searchable (although searches can take some time given the total size of the text), and all the entries are cross-referenced by hot links, making it easy to browse from one to another. On a Kindle device it is obviously very portable, but even without a Kindle it is worth downloading it onto a PC, netbook etc. Regarding the quality of the Kindle version, so far I haven't found any of the annoying conversion errors present in some Kindle editions and the graphics and images also work very well. Highly recommended.

An excellent, well-written reference work from the Oxford Press.

It was purchased as a set book for the OU A219 module, though as a work of reference makes a first class edition to anyone's book collection.
