How can the Crusades be called glorious ? Our modern mindset says they were ugly wars of greed and religious intolerance a big reason why Christians and Muslims today can t coexist peacefully. Historian Steve Weidenkopf challenges this received narrative with The Glory of the Crusades. Drawing on the latest and most authentic medieval scholarship, he presents a compelling case for understanding the Crusades as they were when they happened: armed pilgrimages driven by a holy zeal to recover conquered Christian lands. Without whitewashing their failures and even crimes, he debunks the numerous myths about the Crusades that our secular culture uses as clubs to attack the Church. In place of these myths he offers men and women of faith and valor who pledged their lives for the honor of Christ s holy places. With a storyteller s gift, Weidenkopf relates the Crusades many dramas their heroes and villains, battles and sieges, intrigues and coincidences offering a vivid and engrossing account of events that, though centuries old, have profoundly affected the course of our world to the present day.

Editorial Reviews

Review

This excellent book employs decades of scholarly research to show average readers what medieval historians have long known that popular culture s image of the Crusades has nothing at all to do with the events themselves. Catholics who cringe at the mention of the Crusades will find in this work a surprising and inspiring story of faith. --Thomas F. Madden Director, Center for Medieval and Renaissance Studies, Saint Louis University

Steve Weidenkopf explodes common myths about the Crusades and reveals the nobility and heroism of the Crusaders. This is the book to give to anyone who invokes the Crusades as a blot on the Churchs record. --Robert Spencer Author, The Politically Incorrect Guide to Islam (and the Crusades)

About the Author

Steve Weidenkopf teaches Church history at the Christendom College Graduate School of Theology. He is the author of The Glory of the Crusades and the creator of the Epic video series on Church history. He is also a popular author and speaker on the Crusades and other historical subjects.

I just finished reading The Glory of the Crusades and I strongly recommend it to anyone interested in the Crusades, military history, military science, politics, economics, theology (Christian or islamic, especially) or sociology, though it only touches obliquely on some of these topics (economics and military science are barely relevant in the text, but can't be wholly divorced from the Crusades).

It's a marvelous book and is available in Kindle or bound formats. Its high quality is the result of three specific characteristics the author has bestowed upon this text: 1) flowing and easily comprehended language, 2) careful attention to detail in the scholarship (as exemplified by the bountiful citations provided) and 3) the quality of the speculative or circumstantial reasoning applied to the unknown elements in the histories.

This is one of those books that I wish I could just upload into every person's mind. Every time I picked it up I fought valiantly not to have to put it back down!

I just finished this book. It was a great read. It would appeal to both the casual and academic reader. The author has a smooth flow of words in his writing which is appealing for an academic. So many academic writers tend to be choppy in style, but not Weidenkopf. If you are a fan of the Crusades, as am I, then you will want to pick up this book and learn about the objective truth as it relates to the typically distorted approach to chronicling this movement. The Glory of the Crusades gives a great apologetic in support of an armed pilgrimage that was provoked and necessary. Thank you, Steve Weidenkopf for your hard work in producing such a gem. God Bless, all.

This book tells the history of the time as it was then not as we view it as today. It includes the good, the bad and the ugly, but with the understanding that was the way life was at that time every where. I sheds considerable light on what the Crusades were and why they took place. It dispels much of the exaggerated mythology surrounding the Crusades The world in Europe and the Middle East were quite different, lacking the fines of today. The same personality differences, dislikes, political jostling for power, and control, in other words we have the same political, social and human conduct problems today, not as crude by todays standards with a little more polish in conduct. An excellent book on an important time in history well worth reading.

Opened the book everything else stopped, could not put it down! So many books I've read on this subject, but you find all these resources in one place, telling the Facts good and bad is breathtaking!
Closing the book two thoughts come to mind:
the amazing faith and strength of these Warriors,
second how do you begin to tell others the truth when they've been embedded for so long with the myth?
Love the timeline at end!
Thank you for a wonderful Journey.

Reading from many authors about the crusades this book details a much more intricate detail of how much the crusades were important to the holy land and the love of God. So many heroes, but poor decisions that thwarted victory and now to rediscover the truth on how the Catholic Church did nothing but try to save the holy land and Christendom in defense of misguided Muslims. Reading the brutality of those days and seeing that we cannot use modern sensibilities to view the past. Great read for the truth finally being exposed in defense of the Catholic Church.

Truly a must read for all students of history. Prof. Weidenkopf delivers a well organized document that will be in our classrooms and homes for many years to come. Recommend this book for those read other documents on Crusades as well as those only subscribed to sporadic and ill-informed rendition of what the Crusades were about.

This book is informative and presented in an interesting way. It cleared up a lot of misconceptions I had from a lack of education about the historical events. While I did not think of it before I began reading, as I got into the book and learned, I found it especially timely given the issues with terrorism and extremism committed by people who often blame their Islamic faith. Loved the book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Truth
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 16, 2021
History as written by historians is rarely neutral. We all bring our preconceptions to the table as authors and readers. But there is only one absolute truth.

Crusade history all too often revises the truth that this book clearly covers. They were not marauding, greedy Europeans intent on pillage and plunder but devout Christians who sacrificed much including their lives to RECOVER former Christian lands from the armies of Islam.

This book along with Rodney Starks "God's battalions" are a must to properly understand the armed pilgrimages of the crusades. Islam was encroaching on southern Europe and conquering lands with an aim to include Europe in the Dar al Islam. They had been occupying Spain from 711 AD to 1492 and tried unsuccessfully to conquer France before losing to Charles Martel at the Battle of Potiers (just south of PARIS France) in 732 AD. The first crusade was called by Pope Urban II in 1095 AD; so long after the Islamic invasion of Europe.

This book and the other mentioned correct the current, self hating western narratives.

5.0 out of 5 stars A balanced perspective reflecting the true purpose and spirit of Crusades
Reviewed in India on October 29, 2018
The author goes back in time to understand the spirit of those who actually undertook the crusaders rather than judging it from a post-modern era perspective wherein all wars look evil and unjust. A must read for all Catholics so you can have a proper understanding of the crusades as a pious pilgrimage taken up by knights, soldiers as well peasents at the exhortation of the Pope and with the noble intention of reclaiming Christian territories from Islamic invaders.
