Emperor Dharma Yudhisthir of the Kauravas and Empress Panchali Draupadi rule over the unified realm of Aryavarta, an empire built for them by Govinda Shauri with the blessings of the Firstborn and by the might of those whom everyone believes long gone - the Firewrights. Now the Firewrights rise from the ashes of the past, divided as before in purpose and allegiance, and no one, it seems, can stand in the way of the chaos about to be unleashed on the land - not the Firstborn, not the kings of Aryavarta, and not Govinda Shauri.

As sinister plans are put in play and treacherous alliances emerge, Aryavarta transforms into its own worst enemy. Dharma Yudhisthir gambles away his empire, the tormented empress is forced into a terrifying exile and the many nations of the realm begin to take up arms in a bid to fight, conquer and destroy each other. His every dream shattered, Govinda is left a broken man. The only way he can protect Aryavarta and the woman in whose trusted hands he had left it is by playing a dangerous game. But can he bring himself to reveal the terrible secrets that the Vyasa has protected all his life - secrets that may well destroy the Firstborn, and the Firewrights with them?

In Kaurava, the second book in The Aryavarta Chronicles series, Krishna Udayasankar continues to re-create the world of the Mahabharata and the lives of its characters through stunning imagination and powerful storytelling. This is the epic like it was never told before.

This book has certainly piqued my curiosity to read the last book of the trilogy. The way Krishna Udayasankar has upped the level of thrill and suspense with every passing chapter just highlights how consummate the author is. Every chapter unravels some mystery but this very reason serves the purpose of escalating suspense, thrill, curiosity and astonishment so much so that one would find it extremely difficult to let go of the book. Sequencing of the chapters, clarity of writing and in depth research will leave you gratified for your time and money are put to good use. The author truly deserves the accolades for this well written story.

There are many books where writers tried to retell the epic in a alternate way. Not nullifying the original core of the epic. And each one of them is equally convincing in depicting the characters and doing justice to their characters in their own way. But yours is a different perspective altogether of looking at the origin of the epic to its end. And equally convincing.
But some where the heart broken Govinda and the self destructive self indulgent Govinda for all those 12 years is not palatable to me somehow, equally dramatic was the comeback after all those long years.
But a very good creation it is and am eagerly looking forward to the third book. Best wishes for more such astounding work .

its just too good. But not everyone may appreciate it as the image of their childhood heroes is destroyed. But worth a read.

Good read once well written and a good narrative makes you wonder as to what really must have happened then

A good story. A probable interpretation of events. A mite glib in places but a good read nevertheless. Of course purists would want blood.

The reasoning is very compelling. A must read those who like mythologies. The scene of the game of dice is brilliantly written.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best works aongst the many on mythological fiction
Reviewed in India on February 20, 2017
I am writing the review after I think a year of having read the book. So I don't quite remember the book in detail. But the aspects which I really liked about the book and author:
1. Well developed characters. Too often you read books by first time authors which have good ideas and story lines bu are let down by weak characterisation. Not so with The Aryavarta Chronicles.
2. Skillfully written in terms of language used and command over the narrative. Again, often a problem with first time authors is that the language feels immature, inadequate even crude at times. Krishna comes across as a mature author in this respect.

The series is not for those who are not open to having their view of history (specifically the Mahabharat) challenged as Krishna's portrayals vary from confirming or being very divergent from the conventional portrayals of the characters in Mahabharat. This is appealing for readers like me who would enjoy looking at a story which is probably the most popular mythological story across India from a different perspective rather than the story and characters remaining the same but just a re-telling being done in a different style.

4.0 out of 5 stars THE SAGA OF MYTHOLOGICAL THRILLER CONTINUES...
Reviewed in India on December 4, 2016
Extremely well-written & a commendable effort. If one is a lover of mythological thrillers like myself, the Aryavarta chronicles must be prominent in your bookshelf. You enjoy it & can read it in one breath without getting bored. At the first instance you get tempted to compare it with the works of Amish Tripathi. You might even say it pales in comparison to the Shiva triology. But that according to me would be extremely unfair. Krishna Udayasankar has done extreme justice to the genre of Indian mythological thrillers & can be regarded as one of the pioneers in that cadre. The central characters Govinda Shauri & Panchali rotate around your eyes as a visual narrative treat & in the books too where the narrative rotates around them. If the twists & turns do not enthrall you the narrative definitely will. Though a bit unconventional the image of Krishna as a common gwala gradually elevated to a Godly planner reminds one of the Shiva triology. These new age mythology wizards make one feel that the Gods we worship walked amongst us in flesh & blood only to be elevated to the divine by their deeds & superhuman thoughts. This forms the central principles of "Aham brahmaasmi" or the divinity is manifest in us in accordance with the sanaatan dharma. An extremely sincere effort, worth the read, even if you have to go the extra mile, possess it in your collection.

So hauntingly beautifully written. Panchali's (Draupadi's) vastraharan was so heartbreakingly penned down. How each man failed her. I was so overwhelmed on reading that. Krishna Udayasankara weaves magic with her writing and transports you to that era.

3.0 out of 5 stars A good read.

Predictable for obvious reasons to anyone who has read the total mahabharat, otherwise the style of writing is definitely laudable. Sometimes a little diverted from the normally read stories but none the less for it. A good read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Shades of Krishna......she wrote :)
Reviewed in India on May 14, 2017
Oh how Krishna Udayasankar writes, its more like painting. She brings up shades and shades of each Mahabharata character, doing it the appropriate justice.....and in that vein this is not another angle/perspective on Mahabharata (like Ajaya or Asuras or Palace of Illusions etc)...it can be treated as just another rendition of Mahabharata...a more realistic one though ! And this applies to all 3 books in this series
