I felt like Kendra was transparent in ways that would leave her vulnerable, had she not become the person she is now.
I would encourage all my friends that are questioning their legalism, whether it's from a church or family or if it's something you put on yourself to read this book and complete the after chapter questions.
Kendra gently takes the reader by the hand, showing how we can take the wrong path in spite of our eagerness to take the right one.
She illustrates how fear and the desire to live right can lead us to make the wrong choices, choices that hurt ourselves and others. We take security in “right” choices and behavior, while judging those who don’t make those same choices, the body of Christ ultimately divides itself when it focuses on behavior over loving people where they are.
Kendra shares how she and her husband fell into the trap of letting outward behaviors signal the conditions of their hearts. She writes of how this affected her children and how she and her husband apologized to their kids and began healing.
Kendra's writing is clear and easy to read. My one complaint about the book --- I want more! I think Kendra has more to say, more wisdom we can glean from, but Leaving Legalism is a great starting place for the reader who is questioning their faith community and who wonders if they are the only one.
Kendra will assure you, "No, you are not alone."
Being 10 yrs removed from legalistic involvement, I wasn't sure this book was for me, but it has broadened my scope and understanding of what legalism looks like and how even the simplest of things can become legalistic in our lives if we are placing our hope in that "thing", rather than Jesus Christ.
Read with an open heart and mind...I think you will be glad you did.
