From a decade lived deeply in the chokehold of a legalistic community, Kendra Fletcher emerged to find healing, grace for herself, and a renewed faith that stood apart from the religious confines of her previous life in a rigid church community. Gasping for breath, hoping to find peace, looking to find your way after years of spiritual abuse and religion-driven shame? If it's your time to find freedom and healing, Leaving Legalism will serve as a guide to help you learn not only to separate religious behavior from true faith in Christ, but to emerge confident in the knowledge that you're already loved and accepted far beyond your wildest dreams.Begin your journey to healing as Kendra discusses:- Swinging the pendulum from law to grace- Why rules make us feel safe- How we all end up evangelizing a lifestyle- Our identity in Christ- How to let go of the past- How to learn to rest in what God has done for us- How to move forward (including how to apologize to your children)

I saw this book as a suggested book for me on Amazon and I recognized the author from her blogs (and her husband is our dentist). My husband and I came from a tiny church in Oregon where we caught the legalism bug. We both had to wrestle with God to accept the Grace is enough. Our world changed! Kendra's stories resonate deeply with me, particularly her eldest son. I have a son with similar struggles and reading some of his journey inspired me in the walk with my son.

I felt like Kendra was transparent in ways that would leave her vulnerable, had she not become the person she is now.

I would encourage all my friends that are questioning their legalism, whether it's from a church or family or if it's something you put on yourself to read this book and complete the after chapter questions.

"Are you deep into a community that lives in judgment, is driven by fear, and struggles to give anyone else the benefit of the doubt?" Kendra Fletcher asks, because she has lived in that place.

Kendra gently takes the reader by the hand, showing how we can take the wrong path in spite of our eagerness to take the right one.

She illustrates how fear and the desire to live right can lead us to make the wrong choices, choices that hurt ourselves and others. We take security in “right” choices and behavior, while judging those who don’t make those same choices, the body of Christ ultimately divides itself when it focuses on behavior over loving people where they are.

Kendra shares how she and her husband fell into the trap of letting outward behaviors signal the conditions of their hearts. She writes of how this affected her children and how she and her husband apologized to their kids and began healing.

Kendra's writing is clear and easy to read. My one complaint about the book --- I want more! I think Kendra has more to say, more wisdom we can glean from, but Leaving Legalism is a great starting place for the reader who is questioning their faith community and who wonders if they are the only one.

Kendra will assure you, "No, you are not alone."

Kendra gently and honestly tells her family’s story of being caught by and finding freedom from the trappings of legalistic religion. She offers anecdotes, scriptural backing, and hope for others who may be looking to let go of merit-based religion.

8 years ago I stopped attending the church I grew up in. I thought I had healed and moved through everything and tied it all up with a pretty bow. I bought this book to support the author because I love her! However, I have been slowing working through the chapters and questions on my lunch hour. I become emotional and cry every time. This book is FULL of the gospel. Filled with scripture and truth. Is the author someone who has it all together - no and that is important!!! This author is someone who loves Jesus and proclaims His love for his people, absolutely. A quote on page 20 that stopped me in my tracks "And so I trudged on, unable to understand why this Christian life was so void of the joy it promised" If you have ever felt this way please read this book.

As a Christian in my infancy who has never experienced legalistic captivity but who continues to search for a community to support, encourage, and sharpen my faith, this book resonates deeply in my soul. It is most certainly a guide book for those trying to understand God love truths when rule following comes up short but I feel it can also serve as an enlightenment-a self check for those who have found faith in Christ but are searching for next steps. For those on the verge of falling prey to legalistic communities this book is a light - a firm, unapologetic reminder that Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life. And that thru him it IS finished...you ARE loved.

A perfect read for anyone coming out of legalism or maybe even someone questioning if they are involved in legalism in any way.
Being 10 yrs removed from legalistic involvement, I wasn't sure this book was for me, but it has broadened my scope and understanding of what legalism looks like and how even the simplest of things can become legalistic in our lives if we are placing our hope in that "thing", rather than Jesus Christ.
Read with an open heart and mind...I think you will be glad you did.

This was a great short read. Helpful to reprogram the thinking. The Christian life is not about measuring up, obeying a list of rules to be good enough... It's about how unworthy I am that God should love me and redeem me as I am with all my faults. Living each day in the consciousness of that truth gives grace, freedom and fulfillment - that's what this book helps you see.

I didn't come out of an extreme or truly cult-like community, but the one I grew up in was still heavy handed in law and steeped in pride and fear. Discovering now just how much that mindset has held me captive, but so so grateful for wonderful authors like Kendra who explain grace simply, clearly, and with wisdom.
