In his now classic Two Powers in Heaven, Alan Segal examines rabbinic evidence about early manifestations of the "two powers" heresy within Judaism. Segal sheds light upon the development of and relationships among early Christianity, Gnosticism, and Merkabah mysticism and demonstrates that belief in the "two powers in heaven" was widespread by the first century, and may have been a catalyst for the Jewish rejection of early Christianity. An important addition to New Testament and Gnostic scholarship by this much revered scholar, Segal's Two Powers in Heaven is made available once again for a new generation.

Very difficult to read and understand

Very difficult to read and understand
I was hoping to get a better understanding of how the Trinity Doctrine came to be. However the book was wordy and not easy to understand. I guess if you are a scholar in this field a lot of it would make sense. But for the average person who isn’t familiar with the jargon or literature style, it was to much. If you have a PHD then this book you may enjoy. I struggled to get through the introduction.

Although I would consider myself a layperson, I have a research degree that affords me some critical skills in sifting through content. This was a recommended book that I decided to purchase as I sought to understand the multiplicity of the unseen God, the God that was walking in the garden, and the Wisdom. More correctly, the multiple YHWHs discussed. If one is truly going to break it down, reading a critical review of what was first presented by Rabbis provides context. The most important aspect of all of this, context. As a scholar I respect had said repeatedly, the bible was not written to us, but to the Israelites of the Ancient Near East and Mesopotamia, and we should read it in this context (Paraphrased from Dr Michael Heiser). I seek to understand and value the context that the "Two Powers in Heaven" has provided to my understanding.

This is a clearly written scholarly work. In other words, the context of much research and knowledge is needed to read it and understand his arguments, but it is written in a straightforward, well-organized manner. He covers rabbinical texts, gnostic texts, early Christian father letters and excerpts from the New Testament canon to work backwards through rabbinic polemics about the "two powers in heaven" heresy, searching for historical clues to tie those attacks to communities in a particular place and time. Important for the study of early Christianity, gnosticism and the rabbi movement, this book comes highly recommended for students of religious studies.

Although this is not a real easy read it is very interesting. It is a history of searching where the heresy of two powers originated.

Excellent resource and very informative. Bought this because it was reference by Michael Heiser in The Unseen Realm. I don't buy and read all references in the books I read but I do quite a bit and was glad I bought this one.

4.0 out of 5 stars It's not an easy book to wrap around your head around

It's not an easy book to wrap around your head around...however there is Dynamite information concerning the "Cloud Rider" of the book of Daniel..among other information.. which opens the door for concrete proof that Christian theology concerning the deity of Christ is possibly(actually) correct...segal doesn't come to my conclusion...however he has layed out the facts which were deemed as heresies( for obvious reasons) before the close of the Second century AD......a thinking person's read
