Bonnie Thurston examines the personalities, place, and power of women in the New Testament. She provides a cultural and religious context for them by briefly outlining the position of women in the Greco-Roman world. The aim is to reveal the ways in which early Christianity attempted to liberate people from oppression (particularly patriarchy), as well as to point out the places and ways in which the early Christian community compromised with the dominant society.

Editorial Reviews

Review

'Women in the New Testament' fulfills the hope of the 'Companions to the New Testament' series by exposing the educated non-specialist to the depth, breadth, and importance of feminist New Testament scholarship. Bonnie Thurston's interpretation is faithful to the text in its ancient context, revealing both the problems it poses for the twentieth-century reader committed to the equality of women in family, church, and society and the riches it offers such a liberationist agenda if it is read with new, feminist eyes.

Sandra M. Schneiders, Graduate Theological Union

I have been searching and reading books regarding women in the Bible. This book contains abundant information about the position of women within the world of Greco-Roman period. It will lead the readers to the "women as the image of God" perspectives which was originally designed by GOD.

Covers historical and sociological time in which the women lived . Not as helpful in understanding how God's dealings with the women in the New Testament contributes to understanding how He does today.
Prefer book by Mary Ann Getty-Sullivan I stead.

I am currently teaching a series on "Lesser-Known Women of the Bible." I find Professor Thurston's book to be based on sound research and thoughtful reflection. Of particular help was the section on the cultural and religious background, which focusses on the place of women in N.T. culture. I would suggest this book for study for both women and men who wish to explore what the Bible REALLY says about women.

I wanted something to enable me to do some research on some of the women in the new testament, and this fit the bill perfectly. Was slightly perturbed that I have purchased the wrong book, when I found no back-of-the-book index, but it didn't take me long to get my head around that and was able to make more than usual use of the contents list at the front. The book is well worth reading in it's entirety which I will do soon, and is also perfect as a very useful reference book.
