A.H. Beesley's work delves into pivotal periods of ancient Roman history, focusing on the tumultuous eras of the Gracchi, Marius, and Sulla. This historical narrative meticulously details the lives and influences of significant figures like the Gracchi brothers, Tiberius and Gaius, whose attempts to implement agrarian reforms shook the Roman Republic. It navigates the rise of Gaius Marius, a military leader who transformed the Roman army, and Lucius Cornelius Sulla, who significantly altered the political landscape through military power. The book captures the social, political, and economic tensions that underscored these periods, exploring the power struggles, class conflicts, and the erosion of traditional Roman governance. Beesley's narrative weaves together the complex threads of Roman society, shedding light on the impact of these influential figures and their policies on the Republic's trajectory.

Greeley's work is excellent. However:

The typography of this particular edition (ironically called: First Rate Publishers) is exceedingly poor.
The print is extremely small. The chapter sub-headings lack the attention focusing character of a heading well done.

I subsequently purchased the hard covered edition (Benediction Classics, Oxford) which was much more easy to read.

Interesting work on the military history of Rome. I highly recommend it for anyone who likes ancient military history and battles.
