Many of the earliest books, particularly those dating back to the 1900s and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. We are republishing these classic works in affordable, high quality, modern editions, using the original text and artwork.

Top review from the United States

The one-star rating is generous. If a below-zero category existed, this book would merit five negative stars. It's not the content. For all I know, the information is still useful decades after publication, and to be fair, Harding writes well. He was the director of the Jordanian antiquities service decades ago. The problem is the book's execrable format. It is a very poor-quality photocopy of a book the "publisher" found in a public library, as evidenced by the bar-code strip from the library! All the publisher has done is slap on covers. In parts, the toner cartridge was almost exhausted--the type is faded and streaky. The "plates" are almost useless. Line drawings would have been better. Obviously the publisher could not afford to reset the type and obtain the original photographs or did not deem the effort worthwhile. Despite the low cost, I feel ripped off. This is not a book to be set aside gently but hurled with great force. See if you can find the original edition elsewhere.
