Editorial Reviews
Review
"Many will find specific chapters of interest, both for insights into their own specialities and for challenging overviews of related fields. Students will find stimulating introductions to a wide range of subjects, not treated in encyclopaedias or dryer standard works ... on which to hone their own critical faculties." (Bryn Mawr Classical Review)
"The chapters are written by some of the world's leading scholars, like the veterans Liverani and Limet ... Some of the articles are highly relevant, even dealing with contemporary issues such as the individual, ethnicity ... democracy, and freedom." (Scholia)
"As is usual for the Blackwell Companions the essays making up this volume have all been written by leading experts and as such the coverage is inclusive... The introduction, written by the editor, is excellent and clearly explains what the book is setting out to achieve, aims which are met. A Companion to the Ancient Near East is an excellent book and is one that should, without doubt, be read by those with a keen interest in this historical period." (Reference Reviews)

About the authors
I grew up in Michigan and California and graduated from Stanford University in 1971 and got a Ph.D. from Yale in 1975, and then taught history at the University of Oklahoma, Norman, 2018, when I became emeritus professor, meaning I retired. I still live in an old house in central Norman with some very old dogs and a cat and serve on Norman Public School's elected Board.
With my wife, I try to travel to interesting places; last year those included Israel, Egypt, and Ireland. I had been a student at the Hebrew University many years ago, and lo, and behold, they had moved the university! They hadn't moved much in Egypt, though, or in Ireland for that matter.
I am interested in the Historical Novel, and readers find that some of my books have historical vignettes that enrich the stories with slight fictions. I taught a course on the Historical Novel for many years, and probably should write something scholarly about the genre. But I am also at work on creating my own fictional worlds in the Ancient Near East.
Now I am trying to complete a second edition of the Companion the the Ancient Near East, including new essays by distinguished scholars. The first edition was useful to many readers, and I'm hoping the new one will be equally helpful.

I fail to comprehend the price logic on these items. They would sell more at lower prices.
