The Three Roosevelts is the extraordinary political biography of the intertwining lives of Theodore, Franklin, and Eleanor Roosevelt, who emerged from the closed society of New York's Knickerbocker elite to become the most prominent American political family of the twentieth century. As Pulitzer Prize- and National Book Award-winning author James MacGregor Burns and acclaimed historian Susan Dunn follow the evolution of the Roosevelt political philosophy, they illuminate how Theodore's example of dynamic leadership would later inspire the careers of his distant cousin Franklin and his niece Eleanor, who together forged a progressive political legacy that reverberated throughout the world. Theodore, Franklin, and Eleanor Roosevelt led America through some of the most turbulent times in its history. The Three Roosevelts takes readers on an exhilarating voyage through these tumultuous decades of our nation's past, and these momentous events are seen through the Roosevelts' eyes, their actions, and their passions. Insightful and authoritative, this is a fascinating portrait of three of America's greatest leaders, whose legacy is as controversial today as their vigorous brand of forward-looking politics was in their own lifetimes. "A remarkable example of narrative and biographical history at its best." -- Bruce Clayton, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette "No one has written more trenchantly about Franklin Roosevelt and American politics ... than James MacGregor Burns...." -- H. W. Brands, The Raleigh News & Observer "A detailed study.... Written with impeccable scholarship." -- Malinda Nash, Houston Chronicle

The historian author succinctly blends in the lives of three charismatic national leaders who significantly affected american history. TR is assessed for the passionate liberal leader he was who went from Hamiltonian federalism to Jeffersonian liberalism and always fought the good fight despite human flaws we all have. FDR is characterized as a pragmatic yet humanistic politician who also fought the good fight but realized that sometimes a circuitous route brought the best results. Eleanor was a true humanitarian who as she grew politically and personally championed many causes to help the less fortunate and minorities. I had the honor of meeting her in the last year of her life and cherish the significant contributions she made to the betterment of all. She was not a saint but once she made up her mind to "do good" she stuck to it. This book is a very easy and pleasant read that doesn't get bogged down in unnecessary details but points up important tertiary facts when needed. I recommend it.

A very informative read. If you enjoy politics and history you will want to read this well written work. There is a certain honesty in this work that shows the good and the bad without wearing the reader out with excessive details. The author raises some though provoking questions but allows the reader to answer without undue influence.

A well-written book about these three dedicated PUBLIC SERVANTS. They came out of high society in their time and life, and they found the will and strength in themselves to push back against their social restraints while pushing the welfare of our country forward.

My own parents never forgave President Roosevelt that he agreed to having all ethnic Germans expelled from their homeland of the Sudetenland in (then) Czechoslovakia after WW II, when I was almost four years old. Today I know that we were indeed lucky to be deported to (what became) West-Germany, rebuilt soon on democratic principles, which even won praise by former Secretary of State, Madeline Albright, in her book PRAGUE WINTER.

Why would the book THE THREE ROOSEVELTS - about three people who acted on the world stage 45, 70, 100 years ago - matter today?
The look back in history matters. The look back where we were a hundred years ago, and how we arrived at today, and in what world our grandchildren might live fifty years from now is crucial. Presidents matter; First Ladies matter. Eleanor Roosevelt clearly mattered, as did our Michelle Obama. The incredible highwire act of politics that President Obama had to perform to inch our country forward, was not invented by him but a response to the pressures a democracy exerts on its leaders. TR and FDR had to be just as and even more nimble. Their BELIEFS mattered to the world, and that is where this book scores highly; we find out not only what happened, but why.

I read this book in the interim between election day 2016 and inauguration day 2017; it provided a distinct contrast between the Roosevelts' form of leadership, governing, and vision for America, and what we see on the country's public forum today.

Mr. Burns combines his flowing style to create an entertaining and informative review of the background and impact of the three Roosevelts on the United States landscape from the 1880's to, in some ways, current times. In additon to being well written and sourced he introduces his view of others' expressions and opinions about the trio to season a very digestable menu of what happened and how. It is too bad that the Kindle Edition that I read was not successfully copy edited to correct the linkage between any word starting with the letter"j" (such as the word "jewish") causing no separation between the preceding word and the word starting with a "j".

Anyone seeking to understand US history since the 1880's will glean new information or views by reading this work. It is an enjoyable experience to step back to the times he discusses and see, with added perspective of the space in time since passed, how important the issues the Roosevelts considered high priority were, and their human frailities that, at times, affected the outcomes of their efforts.

A bit of a trudge through TR, even though he was an interesting man. FDR and ER were better, maybe because I was more familiar with them. A very factual book.

Interesting read. I have not completely finished the book since I sandwich it between other things I'm reading. I found it interesting that the author combined the 3 Roosevelts into one book, but they are related and of the same era, so it works. While FDR and Eleanor were husband and wife, they were distant cousins to each other. FDR was a distant cousin to Teddy and Eleanor was his niece. They were all three born to wealth and stature, but all of them had experiences that changed their politics to reframe their thinking. Their transition from wealthy aristocrats to concerns for the greater good and the common man is explained in this book.
