A fine work offering a good survey. However, being written a quarter-century ago, it deserves a revision. Notably, we now use phylogeography (DNA) in researching ancient civilizations (see my "Peoples of Sicily" published in 2013), while digital satellite photography has become more affordable. More recently, a megalithic structure, or temple, has been discovered in the Nebrodian Mountains similar to those erected in Malta around 3500 BC/BCE. Meanwhile, Agrigento's theatre is being excavated. Nevertheless, this book is informative.

Il libro, in inglese, è un sunto di anni di ricerca dei più importanti archeologi della preistoria della Sicilia, coadiuvato dalle ricerche dell'autore soprattutto nell'ambito della protostoria siciliana, ovvero quel periodo che ripercorre soprattutto il II Millennio a.C. e che arriva alla colonizzazione greca. Punto forte è la freschezza delle informazioni, abbastanza aggiornate rispetto a testi ben più autorevoli ma, ahimè, considerabili obsoleti. Nonostante il blocco della lingua che ne riduce l'accessibilità per chi non "mastica" l'inglese, il testo è scritto in modo intuitivo e non troppo accademico, tale che anche chi ha una conoscenza di base della lingua possa attingervi informazioni.
