I got this for my son's Montessori school because today spices are taken for granted. In the past the quest for spices drove the exploration of the world and were important for the economy of those times. This book has great photos of various spices as they are grown and harvested, information about how they are grown now compared to in the past. There was information about many of individual spices that children would be familiar with. There is enough history about the quest for spices and how European's exploited native populations around the world to obtain them. But not so much as to become tedious. The tone is factual but simplified. I think this is a really good book. I plan to get the one on Rubber next!

I bought the whole series of food biographies because not only do children learn how food grows, but they also get a lesson in geography. They can read the book, locate on the globe the countries where the food is grown, but also learn about the people that grow the food.  The Biography of Spices (How Did That Get Here?)
