Christian Thought is a necessary text that every seminarian and lay person needs to have on their book shelf. It would not hurt journalists who cover religious issues either. This text does not take any particular bent favoring one demonimation or another, it only describes the chain of events, the actors, and their rational for advancing their particular school's theological thinking discussing the Trinity and Christology. It also demonstrates that the Council of Nicea was in fact an unsettling but pivitol event in the history of the christian church. Clearly, issues of the Western and Eastern churches are illuminated and one discovers the clear difference between the two camps that in some cases are driven by the Roman Emporers. While not a novel, and intended to be a text book, it does however, read like a novel with political and spiritual intrigue that make one want to move on to the next chapter. Excellent, well written and easy reading for layiety and pastoral communites alike.

This series of books does an excellent job of laying out the issues that confronted Christianity during the first few hundred years. Gonzalez writes in a very accessible style, and tries to keep the technical language to a minimum.
No matter what your exposure to the issues, this book provides an excellent summary and introduction, and is one that I recommend to friends who need a basic grounding in eary Christian thought.
Gonzalez presents a generally balanced view, though it seems that the "orthodox" position is generally portrayed in the best light in most cases, though not to such an extent that the book is heavily biased.
Overall, an excellent introduction and summary. I strongly recommend it.

I own Vol 2 and 3 but wanted to read Vol. 1. I would recommend it to anyone interested in a thorough, but easy to read book about early Christian thought. I am adding it to my rather large collection of church history books and valued it immensely. The author uses so many sources and gives an enormous number of foot notes and extensive bibliography. A great book!

The text is an excellent primer on early Christian thought. The writer leans strongly towards western thought but that has been the case with most books written on church history in the west. Strengths of the text include excellent foot notes, generalized summaries are a fair length appropriate for instruction, and the book is an excellent complimentary book to his other work The Story of Christianity with minimal overlap. There is little weakness to the text. There are a few occasions of things that are in conjecture are presented as fact, but overall I am quiet satisfied with it. This is a go to text I use when instructing others in my local church on church history. I was first introduced to this text in my graduate studies, but would feel comfortable working through the text with anyone at a college level or up.

Very insightful!

Let me start first by saying I have no problem with the content of the book. I use it as a (mandatory) study book for Church History in my MDiv of Theology. It clearly sets out the thoughts, theology and backgrounds that prevailed during past times.

But it seems that this ebook has been OCRed without any further review. Incorrect punctuation, misspellings (e.g. setde rather than settle) and especially in connection with cross references parts of sentences are missing to then later find that they have been displaced up to a whole paragraph.

When you want to do some concentrated reading/studying, this is not what you're hoping to see. So far I'm half way reading the book and have submitted many suggestions for correction using my computer version of Kindle. I hope they will quickly integrate these corrections and publish a new version of this ebook.
