The Greek Myths: The Complete And Definitive Edition Paperback – International Edition, June 21, 2011

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 1,147 ratings

*The definitive and comprehensive edition of Robert Graves's classic retelling of the Greek myths* 'Icarus disobeyed his father's instructions and began soaring towards the sun, rejoiced by the lift of his great sweeping wings. Presently, when Daedalus looked over his shoulder, he could no longer see Icarus; but scattered feathers floated on the waves below...' These are the greatest stories ever told - the labours of Hercules, the voyage of the Argonauts, Theseus and the minotaur, Midas and his golden touch, the Trojan War and Odysseus's journey home - brought together into one epic and unforgettable story. Ideal for the first time reader, it can be read as a single page-turning narrative, while full commentaries as well as a comprehensive index of names make it equally valuable for anyone seeking an authoritative and detailed account of the spectacular stories that make up the bedrock of Western literature. The Greek Myths is a classic among classics, a treasure trove of extraordinary tales and a masterful work of literature in its own right.

If you want a bedtime story book to read to your children, this may not be the most popular collection of Greek myths for that purpose. But if you have a curious mind and seek a deeper meaning about the stories that inspired and shaped the western world, Robert Graves can’t be beat.

Robert Graves provides clear, well-researched, interesting comments and explanations of Greek mythology and the characters and intrigues involved in their lives and the lives they affected (and to some extent, still affect). More detailed than Hamiltion's text and more fully explained.

I love this book! It is amazing! The only downside is that it took about 2-3 weeks to get here.

So detailed and informative! Even includes all the small roles that people either forget about or don’t even know about! Great for educational and recreational reading. A great resource for work.

1.0 out of 5 stars Bad quality paper and doesn't invite to read

As in the headline, once again I got tempted by a pretty cover but the quality of paper and print is very low and you just don't feel like want to read such a book. This is more personal, but I was also looking for a selection of the most popular myths, but this looked like a complex history/theory book.

If you're interested in the details of greek mythology, in every aspect of the tales and where they come from, than this is the book for you. If you mostly aim for entertainment, than it is probably not.
