The Tibetan Book of the Dead is one of the texts that, according to legend, Padma-Sambhava was compelled to hide during his visit to Tibet in the late 8th century. The guru hid his books in stones, lakes, and pillars because the Tibetans of that day and age were somehow unprepared for their teachings. Now, in the form of the ever-popular Tibetan Book of the Dead, these teachings are constantly being discovered and rediscovered by Western readers of many different backgrounds--a phenomenon which began in 1927 with Oxford's first edition of Dr. Evans-Wentz's landmark volume. While it is traditionally used as a mortuary text, to be read or recited in the presence of a dead or dying person, this book--which relates the whole experience of death and rebirth in three intermediate states of being--was originally understood as a guide not only for the dead but also for the living. As a contribution to the science of death and dying--not to mention the belief in life after death, or the belief in rebirth--The Tibetan Book of the Dead is unique among the sacred texts of the world, for its socio-cultural influence in this regard is without comparison.

This fourth edition features a new foreword, afterword, and suggested further reading list by Donald S. Lopez, author of
Prisoners of Shangri-La: Tibetan Buddhism and the West. Lopez traces the whole history of the late Evans-Wentz's three earlier editions of this book, fully considering the work of contributors to previous editions (C. G. Jung among them), the sections that were added by Evans-Wentz along the way, the questions surrounding the book's translation, and finally the volume's profound importance in engendering both popular and academic interest in the religion and culture of Tibet. Another key theme that Lopez addresses is the changing nature of this book's audience--from the prewar theosophists to the beat poets to the hippies to contemporary exponents of the hospice movement--and what these audiences have found (or sought) in its very old pages.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Dr. Evans-Wentz, who literally sat at the feet of a Tibetan lāma for years in order to acquire his wisdom...not only displays a deeply sympathetic interest in those esoteric doctrines so characteristic of the genius of the East, but likewise possesses the rare faculty of making them more or less intelligible to the layman."--Anthropology (on the previous edition)

Read it well and wisely. What more could be said than already has been?

If one doesn't know what they're buying, this book will be an adventure for first time trippers, scholars, and mystics alike. Akin to many scriptural texts, the book needs be read aloud and studied with care for its illuminatory properties to influence oneself adequately. There are many interpretations and commentaries included for those new to such texts, and overall, these are worth the additional time and interest, if somewhat predictable for the familiar.

The best english language translation! A tough minded book on a redoubtable subject--absolutely not user-friendly, but if you want both the sanctity of its prayers along with the wrathful visions that confront the unenlightened soul--look no further. If you must seek another translation--avoid any rendering which refuses to employ the word "bardo--it will be Tibetan lite and not worth the investigation...if you step towards the happy tiddings of the new age scriptures--most probably The Tibetan Book of the Dead is not for you...Happy incarnations!

Still reading it again for the first time in years. Heavy duty but relevant with respect to thinking of the important issues of life and death. Of course it's a magnificent classic. Thanks for the speedy delivery. It will take me a while to digest the work at my nightly pace. Much food for thought with respect to right living and pondering the nature of life as well as the afterlife.

I have been studying religion since college and found this version of this book to be excellent and inspiring. Being Buddhist it fits in with my beliefs and practice. Some of other faiths may find the language and references to Buddhist theme a bit confusing but approached with an open mind and heart I feel it can be of benefit to all beings in facing fears of death.

This is a book for the Living, One who is on the path of Transformation. It contains plenty of half truths, but the western initiate will see parallels in his own experience. He needs to read between the lines whereby he could extract some nuggets which would be invaluable and reassuring . For the ordinary man it would make good reading. The proof of the Pudding is in the Eating.

This text is a perfect gem. I have read it many times since 1968, and each reading reveals deeper and deeper treasures. Having also enjoyed many more 'modern' expositions and commentaries on the Book of the Dead, I keep coming back to this one for its innate potency. I lost my original in a fire in 1993, and having this on now my Kindle is equivalent to the ongoing company of an old and dear friend

I think that the book is well written, though its instructions may sound a bit unbelievable to a Western reader not very familiar with Hinduism.
Nevertheless, I do believe that a dying person may benefit from human company during the process. This I can attest to.

I was not very familiar with this book, so was well impressed when I read it. What a great help it seems to be to those about to embark for the afterlife. Maybe we should consider this service in the western world?
