This revelatory manifesto speaks to the heroine in every woman and man, offering potent strategies drawn from ancient Greek wisdom that can help us find happiness even in today’s unfinished social revolution. Four archetypal plotlines—two feminine, two masculine—chart this path toward greater life satisfaction.

In this empowering work, Carol S. Pearson, the bestselling author of The Hero Within and Awakening the Heroes Within, reveals how the Demeter and Persephone story uncannily mirrors cultural and political dramas being played out today before our very eyes, and then shows how these conflicts could be resolved. In the myth, the earth mother wins a power struggle with a patriarchal god, thereby ending a famine (think climate change) that threatens human survival. As this is occurring, a youthful goddess gains her freedom, asserting gender partnership and equality, and as a result gives birth to joy and celebration.

The archetypal figures and narratives that galvanize attention in the public world also activate them within us as individuals. The challenge, then, is to live these stories wisely, shifting their expression within us for our own good and that of our society. The example of the four major mythic characters illustrates how readers can move from feeling powerless to purposeful, disrespected to esteemed, trapped to free, and anxious to joyful.

Drawing on her profound understanding of myth's enduring power to catalyze such transformations, Pearson guides readers of Persephone Rising on a journey of self-discovery, teaching us how to apply lessons from Demeter and Persephone, as well as Zeus and Dionysus, in our own lives—examples that reveal unexpected choices and opportunities available to us all.

Editorial Reviews

Review

“For many of us women the story of Demeter and Persephone is the most challenging and illuminating of all myths. Each of us retells it in her own way, a way that reflects what it means to her.” — Christine Downing, author of The Long Journey Home: Re-visioning the Myth of Demeter and Persephone for Our Time

“Persephone Rising leads readers down the processional path of the ancients into a modern initiation where the power to change reveals we can all awaken the heroine within.” — Rewire Me

Carol Pearson’s gentle reframing of the tale that served as the basis of the Eleusian Mysteries, brings these gods and goddesses to life... Pearson writes with an eye toward empowering women, not by disparaging men, but by pointing us in the direction of our lost history. — Retailing Insight

“Persephone Rising spoke to my bone marrow-its truths resonating with clarity and power. A beautiful retelling and updating of these ancient archetypes-so relevant today. ” — Christiane Northrup, M.D. and author of the New York Times bestsellers: Goddesses Never Age and The Wisdom of Menopause

“Through these classical archetypes of antiquity, Pearson guides us moderns in examining not only our fundamental, underlying beliefs but also those of our greater society.” — Spirituality and Health

About the Author

Carol S. Pearson, Ph.D., D.Min., is an internationally known authority on archetypes and their application to everyday life and work. Her early work in this field, upon which she has expanded over time, produced books and monographs that have helped people all over the world find their purpose and live more fulfilling and successful lives through increasing their archetypal narrative intelligence. Such books include The Hero Within: Six Archetypes We Live By and Awakening the Heroes Within: Twelve Archetypes To Help Us Find Ourselves and Transform Our World. Together with Hugh Marr, she also developed the Pearson-Marr Archetype Indicator™ (PMAI™), a tested instrument that helps individuals discover the archetypes that motivate them at a deep level, along with a supporting workbook, What Stories Are You Living? Discover Your Archetypes--Transform Your Life, that allows them to discover which of their active archetypes is a core archetype, which might be related to an area of unlived vitality, and which might cause them problems if they fail to connect with it. This system is also implicit in her mythology-based book Persephone Rising: Awakening the Heroine Within, written for both men and women.

Dr. Pearson’s more recent work helps individuals and leaders not only achieve personal success in their careers but also to develop workplaces that are healthier for employees and that enhance the ability of organizations to achieve their goals. Publications on this subject include The Hero and the Outlaw: Building Extraordinary Brands Through the Power of Archetypes (co-authored by Margaret Mark); Mapping the Organizational Psyche: A Jungian Theory of Organizational Dynamics and Change (co-authored by John Corlett); Magic at Work: Camelot, Creative Leadership, and Everyday Miracles (with Sharon Seivert), and The Transforming Leader: New Approaches to Leadership for the Twenty-First Century (ed.), which grew out of a three-year project with the Fetzer Institute that she co-led. As part of that project, she also wrote a pamphlet that uses an archetypal analysis to help readers understand contemporary American culture: Maturing the American Dream: Archetypal American Narratives Meet the Twenty-First Century. In addition, she developed the Organizational and Team Culture Indicator™ (OTCI™), a tested instrument that identifies archetypes in organizational cultures. The OTCI was acquired by Kenexa, a global human resources firm, in 2008 and was renamed the Kenexa Cultural Insight Survey™ (KCI™). It is used for internal branding and to enhance employee satisfaction, effectiveness, and retention.

Many of Dr. Pearson’s publications are available in a growing number of foreign languages and in e-book as well as print form.

A respected scholar and higher education administrator, Dr. Pearson served most recently as Executive Vice President/Provost and then President of Pacifica Graduate Institute. Previously, she was Professor of Leadership Studies in the School of Public Policy at the University of Maryland and the Director of the James MacGregor Burns Academy of Leadership. During her tenure, the Academy was the incubator of the International Leadership Association (ILA), and Dr. Pearson was a member of ILA’s Board of Directors. Currently, she is an author and educator in private practice.

Good for our Relationship
I am reading out loud some relevant passages to my partner. It is helpful to see aspects of our story reflected back to us through these archetypal figures and stories. They open a dialog that flows from the recognition that our issues are universal and we can see ourselves in the context of human family. The Ancient Greek stories have the power take us deeper because the personality traits of the gods are also to be found within ourselves. Carol's treatment and interpretation connects the dots in a way that is transformative, letting us know from within that we have the power improve ourselves individually as well as our relationship. Self knowledge breeds acceptance and confidence in our capacity to actualize our highest aspirations. This book helps us to achieve this.

Excellent writing on the archetypal qualities of Persephone, especially considering how difficult it is to find consistent information on the story that surrounds her. I also love how connections are made in the dynamics between Zeus, Demeter, Hecate and Persephone as well. Wonderful read and helped me greatly in understanding some of my own subconscious inclinations.

In Persephone Rising, Carol Pearson adds a deeply insightful and just-right-for-the-times entry to her extensive catalog on the intersection of ancient myth and modern meaning. Through the interlocking stories of Persephone, Demeter, Zeus and Dionysus (especially Demeter’s abduction into the Underworld), Dr. Pearson sheds new light on what today’s women need to be happier, more fulfilled and more authentically alive. This wise and wonderful book is a must-read for any woman looking to claim her own power, purpose and potential in the world.

A beautifully written exploration of the myth of Demeter-Persephone, mother-daughter. Rich and useful analysis of these archetypal energies,
and how they may be lived out unconsciously in our lives, when one is gripped by that energy. Important for men as well as women. I highly recommend it.

I liked it well enough to read the whole thing, but found it long-winded, a little dated and lazy in the way that the author spends multiple chapters re-telling stories from the works of others to make her point. I found it rather intellectually lazy and hollow. There are much better books out there that don’t take nearly 400 pages to make the points that others have already made.

I wanted to love this book. I am looking for a good core feminine archetypal myth that works for woman in the same way the hero's myth works for men, but I find the often long winded, over done feminist commentary ruins a more pure interpretation of the myths. For most of humanity, not everything had to twisted around a frame of poor women. Everyone has problems and I wish I could find a myth that has not been made profane by the need to chatter endlessly about how women shared the same oppressed fate by most humans since the dawn of civilization.
