From New York Times bestselling author Bernard Cornwell, the tale of three brothers and of their rivalry that created the mysterious Stonehenge.

One summer’s day, a dying stranger carrying great wealth in gold comes to the settlement of Ratharryn.

The three sons of Ratharryn’s chief each perceive the great gift in a different way. The eldest, Lengar, the warrior, harnesses his murderous ambition to be a ruler and take great power for his tribe. Camaban becomes a great visionary and feared wise man, and it is his vision that will force the youngest brother, Saban, to create the great temple on the green hill where the gods will appear on earth. Saban’ s love for Aurenna, the sun bride whose destiny is to die for the gods, finally brings the rivalries of the brothers to a head. But it is also his skills that will build the vast temple, a place for the gods, certainly, but also a place that will confirm for ever the supreme power of the tribe that built it.

Editorial Reviews

From the Back Cover

Bestselling author Bernard Cornwell takes us back four thousand years, to a vibrant world of ritual and sacrifice that is at once timeless and wholly original. This historical novel unlocks the mystery of Britain's most haunting and puzzling structure, and tells a tale of three brothers—fierce rivals—who are uneasily united in their quest to create a temple to their gods. Lengar, the eldest brother, kills his own father to become chief of his tribe. Camaban, the illegitimate middle brother, is determined to have a massive temple built in his own honor. And Saban, the youngest, who actually builds Stonehenge, must act as mediator between the other two. Stonehenge is the enthrallingly dramatic story of patricide, betrayal, and murder; of bloody brotherly rivalry; and of the never-ending quest for power, wealth, and spiritual fulfillment.

About the Author

BERNARD CORNWELL is the author of over fifty novels, including the acclaimed New York Times bestselling Saxon Tales, which serve as the basis for the hit Netflix series The Last Kingdom. He lives with his wife on Cape Cod and in Charleston, South Carolina.

Bernard Cornwell does a phenomenal job of giving a fascinating look into the lives and motivations of the builders of Stonehenge. I became engrossed in this fictional world full of intrigue, political maneuvering, brutality and spiritual questing. The characters are plausible and engaging while living out their lives in a time that we know so little about. I was left with the feeling that this is a valid possible theory about the creation of such an enduring prehistoric mystery. A truly entertaining read for anyone that enjoys historical fiction. Mr. Cornwell is a brilliant author that demonstrates the courage to work with a place in time that very few authors would dare to try. His choice of time frame ensured that I read something that felt original and not simply a re-hash of an overly used storyline.

I'm a big fan of Bernard Cornwell and was little disappointed in this book. It wasn't a page turner like most of his previous books. Although still a good story, it didn't draw me in like his previous books have.

After reading the Grail Quest series I decided to read more by Bernard Cornwell. I thought this was just average, especially when compared to the Grail Quest Series.

I found too much filler narration, but I did like the action parts, especially the battle for Cathallo, where there was good development of both the strategy and tactics of the opposing tribes. There also appears to be some thought in the engineering challenges in actually building Stonehenge with only muscle power.

However, the relationship of Saban, the main character, with his brothers and the women he loves becomes very predictable, and his miraculous escape from being killed on numerous occasions seems unrealistic. The actual ending action became somewhat predictable after a damaged pillar stone was allowed to remain part of the temple; there were 2 or 3 outcomes that could occur after that.

This story is good for readers who just need something to pass the time for a while; for really good historical fiction I would expect much better from Bernard Cornwell.

Again, Cornwall came through with a great novel and at the same time gave me a historical prospective to the period of English history. I like his writing so much I am trying to read all his novels. I have read thousands upon thousands of books in my lifetime and as of now he is my favorite. As a history major in college 50 years or so ago, I took 4 courses in English History and as an American had trouble with the names. Just wish I could have read his novels before I took the classes. Mrs. Egbert would have given me higher grades.

Enjoyed this tale of an unknown time. It is inescapable to to view our human history and not be fascinated by what must have happened. Enjoyed this attempt to explain.

This is the first book of Cornwall's that I have read. I am not a big fiction reader but love ancient history. I was expecting somewhat of a slow paced drama. Not so. The story has plots, twists and turns no-one expects. Couldn't put it down.

No one knows how or why Stonehenge was built. Archaeologists have examined the site and items found around the henge. I read some time ago that x-ray type examination has been done at the site and surrounding area.
Having said this, Bernard Cornwell gives us his impressions of who, why, and how Stonehenge was created. In his Author's Notes, he mentions several other henges in England, Wales, Scotland, and Ireland created in neolithic times.
I found the book to be fascinating.

the first 2/3 of the book was very good... the last third slow and superfluous. I am a fan of Cornwell and was disappointed that my interest fell off a cliff. The characters suddenly became ones I had no sympathy/empathy or any pathy with (except Saban who is the all around good guy). They all got what they deserved and the stones are there. To his defense this is the oldest book I've read his newer books have not yet dragged for me... so maybe this was a beta attempt. I expect all his books to be as good as 1356 and Agincourte excellent books in my opinion.

I just want to say that if you are not like some of the "intellectuals" here that write reviews; that I have found Cornwell's books to be very appealing to my average intelligence thirst for new ideas, stories, and maybe even some history. This is a great author for the average browser/reader that like a little historical data thrown in (even though I can't challenge the facts... like some folks here). So if you spent as much time in the principals office as the library, you'll enjoy his books. You'll also feel a little smarter by the end of the book.

5.0 out of 5 stars better than expected!

Great reading and page turner! Very fast paced story and you don’t know what is coming. I really enjoyed the storyline and I learned a great deal about how people could have possibly lived during the Bronze Age in Britain. The main character is not the typical bad ass warrior as in many of Bernard Cromwell’ books, but still strong and determined.

I'm a avid Cornwell fan, but I found Stonehenge a bit more difficult to sink my teeth into the reality of the story. Still, it's a good story and as well, a convincing arquiological version of the possiblilities of the technology at that time.

4.0 out of 5 stars A great historical recreation

The author brings back to life the ancient customs in a direct and vibrant manner. You understand the way of thinking of our ancestors and realize that it is comparable to the behavior of the more recent tribes earlier to colonization all over the world. The history is so interesting that you can not leave the reading. Although the real meaning of Stonehenge will never be known, in the end you get an idea of what the monument may have represented for its builders. Recommendable.
