The most comprehensive scientific study of the extinct Jomon Race and Culture of ancient Japan. The Jomon were systematically eliminated by 8th century CE Japanese Yamato military campaigns. The Yamato were a Han Chinese military group who invaded Japan during the Kofun period (250 - 550 CE) and conquered the migrant Korean "Yayoi" rice farmers. The 3 historically Japanese Yamato islands were Kyushu, Shikoku and Honshu. The "Foreign Frontiers" of Hokkaido and Okinawa were annexed over 1,000 years later, thus sparing their indigenous Jomon populations (the "border people," or hayahito) from the Jomon Holocaust of Japan.

If you're looking for "the story of the Jomon people" or "a guide to Jomon Pottery," this is not the book for you. Since their culture, religion, stories, even language are all lost to time, all that a serious archaeologist (such as the author) can present is the data gained from excavations and the more likely theories and alternative theories gleaned from that data. That said, we are free to imagine our own, personal ideas of what it was like to live as a Jomon person from what is provided.

This book provides a very good survey of the work that has been done in the study of the Jomon period and provides interesting theories based on the author's reading of the research and her own work. The "but" has to do with Amazon, not the book. The photo shown in the Amazon listing shows the hardcover book with a dust jacket. The picture shown on the jacket is the only photograph of a Jomon pot used in the book. (There are only sketches and photographs of pot shards in the book proper.) The dust jacket also provides the only color image and the image on the cover is referred to several times in the text. The problem is that the book Amazon actually ships does not include the dust jacket. Therefore, the reader is left without this resource while reading the book. I contacted Amazon regarding this and requested that they send the duct cover. They said they could not send the cover but would exchange the book for one with a cover. I agreed with this. Of course, when I received the second book it too was missing the dust cover.
