In this absorbing history of progressive-era America, acclaimed historian David Traxel paints a vivid picture of a tumultuous time of change that was the foundation for the twentieth century.. With WWI on the horizon, the struggles to end child labor, improve public health, advance education, win votes for women, and rid cities of corrupt political machines brought forth passionate responses from millions of Americans. There was a demand for reform and a desire for a more efficient and compassionate society. From wide-eyed dreamers to hard-line politicians, seasoned reporters to diary keeping soldiers, these crusaders–Jack Reed, Theodore Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, Margaret Sanger, and “Mother” Jones to name a few–come alive in these pages.

I found Crusader Nation to be a fine, well- written, and particularly gripping introduction to the period of US history often referred to as the Progressive Era. In many ways the period of US history between the years 1898 and 1920 shaped a lot of what has come since. And many of the personalities were larger than life.

The book uses the lives of several prominent individuals to illustrate the times. Among those people, Woodrow Wilson, Theodore Roosevelt, Jack Reed, John "Black Jack" Pershing, "Big" Bill Haywood, and "Mother " Jones, to name but a few. I found the continuing saga of Jack Reed particularly interesting.

Traxel highlights several of the key events associated with the times, including life in the US after the Spanish- American War, continuing violence between workers and capitalists, and various race riots as well. Much of the book has to do with the build- up to the First World War and the War itself. It is also a very good addition to the literature on WWI.

I recommend this book to anyone interested in US history, the history of WWI, or labor history, as the book also focuses heavily on those aspects of history.

The book is mistitled; it's about the 1910s, especially 1912-1918. By page 26, it's in 1912. It's more of a journalistic account, light on analysis and argument. The overall narrative is punctuated/ interrupted/ enhanced by minor episodes that add color and insight, such as a description of the German attempts at sabotage, of Henry Ford and his Peace Ship, and the story of the "Battle Cry of Peace," a 1915 film that looked to cash in on "Birth of a Nation" while promoting American preparedness. There's also an attempt to describe the decade through the lives of individuals, mostly through the life of Jack Reed. The book does a good job dealing with the US interventions in Mexico from 1914-1916, as well as giving a picture of the radical left during the 1910s. It probably spends a little too much time on 1914-1916. It would have done well to add another 50 pages or so on 1917-1919, to give it some balance.

The book is disappointing in that its title implies an interesting argument: that the push for domestic reforms in the 1910s as well as American participation in World War I were seen as and treated as a crusade. However, no where in the book is this idea explicitly argued for. Perhaps after 350 pages of facts and descriptions the reader is expected to take it as gospel, or to make up his own argument for it? Also, the meaning and significance of Americans as crusaders is not addressed. Why did Americans see things in this way?

This book is just not that deep. There's nothing revolutionary here; it's just a straight-forward, journalistic, accessible account of the decade of the 1910s; good for just that, but don't expect much more.

Crusader Nation is a fine book to give one a good, albeit fairly shallow, understanding of the forces at work in the Progressive movement of the first two decades of the twentieth century. From the frenetic absolutism of TR to the revolutionary fervor of the IWW to the righteousness of purpose of Wilson, Traxel's writing deftly conveys a feel for the personalities and people of the age. This is especially true of his writing about the interesting life of John Reed. This is a shining part of the book, giving good depth to the topic of the first American Communists and fellow travelers.

My only criticism is the lack of details in many of the topics being argued. For example, the famous fourteen points that Wilson abandoned--much to the dismay of his stateside leftist following--is not covered in any detail. Why then did the Greenwich Village set get so angry about the modifications, whatever those were? In the same vein Traxel barely mentions the reasoning for any opposition to the League of Nations.

Overall I recommend this for someone looking for a feel for the age but doesn't long for the fine detail.
